Location
Smerral is located on the east coast near Latheronwheel. The village was set up in 1835 by Captain Robert Dunbar a landowner. A single street leads to the small harbour. A single span bridge from 1726 still survives but carries no traffic now. Up to 50 boats used this harbour at the height of the great herring boom. The old Post Office is still in use today.
The village of Lybster is only 5 miles away and has an excellent primary school, post office, several village pubs and service station. The town of Wick is only 15 miles to the North.
Directions
From the South, follow the A9 until just before Latheronwheel, you will see a road to your left signposted Smerral. Follow this road until you come to Kyle Croft on your right hand side. The ruined cottages can be seen below this croft at the rear.
From the North, follow the A99 to Latheronwheel, take the Smerral road to your right. Follow this road until you come to Kyle Croft on your right hand side. The ruined cottages can be seen below this croft at the rear.
